Takoradi Port Information
ADVISING ETA
48/12 hours before arrival. Communication may sometimes pose a problem, particularly for vessels arriving Takoradi via Abidjan, as overland facilities are inadequate. In such case masters are requested to radio us before leaving Abidjan giving us some indication of vessels ETA
AIRPORT
Kotoka International Airport is located abt. 30 km from Tema, on the Eastern side of Accra.
ANCHORAGE
In Takoradi Bay with depth of more than 11 metres (please see location as per Admiralty Chart No. 3012) Quarantine: see AC No. 3012 beyond the two breakwaters at the approach to the harbour entrance.
APPROACH
Apart from the Takoradi Reef, situated south of the Main Breakwater and ship wrecks noted on AC No. 3012, approach to the entrance is free from hazards. There are adequate navigational aids to ensure the safety of ships using the port:
1.Takoradi Lighthouse 4°532’N 1°345’W: group flashing white, 10 seconds, visible 32 km.
2. Main breakwater head: flashing red once second, visible 11.2 km.
3. Lee Breakwater Head: fixed green, visible 12.8 km.
4. Fog bell: every 5 seconds on Lee Breakwater Head.
5. Cement clinker (Jetty Head Green): every 4 seconds.
Restrictions: Draft: 10.36m F, 10.97m A, LOA: 180 m, Beam: No limit
Ghanaian flag to be hoisted.
CRANES
No heavy lift equipment or floating cranes available.

FIRE FIGHTING
The port has a well organised fire fighting service on duty 24-hrs a day with modern appliances. Tugs are fitted with fire fighting equipment with fire monitors located on top of the superstructure. Fire services can be contacted from all boxes on transit sheds/shed 4 & main gate or telephone no. 233-31-24073
HARBOUR
The Harbour of Takoradi consists of only one basin with nine berths, including two dry bulk, one container, ro-ro and an oil terminal. There is also a berth with a depth of five metres for fishing vessels at the former coal wharf:.

SHIP REPAIR
Small dry dock for fishing vessels only up to 508 dwt and a slipway for vessels of up to 30 metres.
SUPPLIES
Fresh water: available by pipe at berths 4,5 & 6 at cost of US$3.95 per ton. Rate of supply is 20 tons/hour. Water barge for vessels moored at bouys.
Bunker: fuel and diesel oil is available at the main quay whereas the petrol terminal is served by pipeline and tankers as per stem order from owners/operators. All grades of fuel available from Shell (Ghana) Ltd, Elf (Ghana) Ltd and Mobil (Ghana) Ltd.
TIDES:
Semi diurnal with a range of abt. 1 Metre.
TOWAGE
Compulsory within the Main Harbour and to be ordered through Signal Station or agent. Tugs of up to 1,250 hp available on special application. 2 tugs of 1,860 kw with abt. 40 metres bollard pull available.
WEATHER
Prevailing winds from SW except during Harmattan when NE winds are dominating. There are two rainy seasons, from April to July and September to mid-November. Tornadoes are possible during July to September.
WORKING HOURS
The port is working round the clock and operates with 2 shifts: 07:30-19:30 hrs and 19:30-07:30 hrs with 30 minute meal breaks.

Normal hours: 0730-1200, 1400-1700 & 1930-0330
Overtime hours: 1230-1400, 1700-1930 & 0330-0730
SATURDAY/SUNDAY/HOLIDAYS
Overtime hours: round the clock
LATEST TIME OF ORDERING GANGS:
For weekdays: 1500/1600 hrs the day before with possibility of cancellation up to 0645 on the day the gang is ordered for.
For Saturdays/Sundays: 0730 hrs
